1,720 Points, No Moves: What I Learned From 911.9

VN-Index chart showing sideways movement near the 1,720 points resistance level

VN-Index moving sideways around 1,720 points is a signal worth understanding, not fearing — it usually means the market is waiting for a clearer catalyst before choosing direction. I remember watching the board bounce around one level for an entire week. No breakout up, no crash down, just back and forth.

Back in 2021 I hated weeks like that. I wanted fireworks, I wanted my portfolio green and loud. Looking back now, those quiet grinding weeks were the market simply breathing.

I did not know how to read that breath then, I only knew how to chase price with emotion. The bill for that came due when VN-Index dropped to 911.9 points by late 2022.

📌 What is happening

VN-Index is expected to trade sideways between 1,700 and 1,720 points next week, with analysts advising investors not to chase prices in this zone. No clear breakout signal has emerged from the resistance level yet.

What Ho Alva sees

A sideways zone like 1,700 to 1,720 points is a genuine test of discipline, not a sign that nothing important is happening. It gives you no rush to jump in and no fear to force you out, which is exactly why impatient investors tend to make mistakes here.

I lived through peak overconfidence in 2021. The market kept rising and I thought I had figured it out. That silence in a flat market once made me chase price out of impatience.

The question I ask myself now: why do we always feel uncomfortable when the market does nothing? I think it is because we treat money as a tool for action, not a tool for waiting.

I work with many women building financial independence. What I notice is that we often feel pressure to do something to feel in control, when staying still and watching is the wiser move.

🔍 A number worth more attention

The phrase “not chase prices” matters more than the 1,720 figure itself, because for individual investors the biggest trap is rarely picking the wrong stock — it is picking the wrong moment to enter while the market hesitates. I paid for this exact mistake with an entire account in 2022.

📊 Impact on the Vietnam market — my personal view

This reflects my personal observations only — not investment advice.

Short term (1–3 months)

Sideways periods near resistance often last longer than investors expect, and a flat market does not mean safety. In 2022, as the Fed kept raising rates, VN-Index also moved sideways for a while before dropping sharply to 911.9 points.

Medium term (3–12 months)

Looking back at the 2018 cycle when the US-China trade war broke out, Vietnam’s market wobbled at first, but the FDI shift toward Vietnam afterward created long-term growth momentum for certain sectors. I think the current sideways zone could also be an accumulation phase before a new macro story shapes the trend.

Long term (1 year and beyond)

In my view, the market upgrade story and the return of foreign capital remain the more important structural factor for VN-Index long term, more than where it settles next week. This is purely a personal observation, not a guaranteed forecast.

Reminder: I am not recommending buying or selling any asset. Everyone has different risk tolerance and financial circumstances, please research independently or consult an expert before making decisions.

What I have lived through

I chased prices in sideways sessions just like this back in 2021, believing my finance degree was enough. The result was losing everything when the market reversed in early 2022, then getting scammed out of hundreds of millions of dong by Mr. Pip on fake forex platforms.

From there I relearned everything from scratch, working alongside anh Chi Hieu Nguyen and the Faviz Investment team, learning to read the market with data instead of emotion.
